Focus and Scope

UnderCurrents is committed to publishing a variety of scholarly, creative, and activist work that critically engages with conceptions of the environment and seeks to break down traditional interpretations of the world around us. Work published in UnderCurrents examines the relations among humans and more-than-human beings, natural and built environments, and social and cultural movements. UnderCurrents does not publish work that engages in discriminatory discourse and aims to promote social and environmental justice.

Peer Review Process

Although UnderCurrents publishes many forms of work (eg. traditional academic journal articles, visual art, poetry, short fiction, hybrid essays, multi-media work), all submissions are double-blind reviewed by members of the editorial collective. Reviewers are assigned based on interest, expertise, and availability.

The editorial collective works closely with contributors to develop their work for publication in the journal, and submissions often go through several rounds of review.

Reviewers should provide a substantive review of assigned submissions within 10 days of receiving them. All correspondance will be through the UnderCurrents website.

Publication Frequency

UnderCurrents publishes an annual themed volume in both print and online formats. Additionally, UnderCurrents publishes online content that is related to the yearly theme or to the focus on critical environmental studies of the journal more generally, on an ongoing basis.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
